The Australian Government officially recognised the Blackbird trade descendants from the 80 islands of Vanuatu and Solomons as a distinct cultural group on 25 August 1994.
Redfern Community Centre will host a special event on Friday 25 August to celebrate the anniversary and promote cultural connection and learning. Enjoy storytelling, performance, history talks and panel discussions. Experience cultural dances, hip hop, song and more.
Other events include a flag raising ceremony on the steps of Sydney Town Hall, an Australian South Sea Islanders basketball competition at KGV Recreation Centre on Sunday 13 August and an embroidery workshop on 19 August.
