9 reasons to give riding to work a go

There’s never been a better time to dust off your 2-wheeler and try riding in Sydney.

Here’s a few of the best benefits of swapping the car, bus or train for a bike ride to work.

  1. You’ll feel better for it: kick the caffeine and amp up the adrenaline with exercise instead. Riding to work will help you arrive more alert and builds exercise into your routine, helping improve your physical fitness and mental wellbeing.
  2. You’ll save money: commuting by bus from the inner city costs around $33 a week – by bike the journey is free! Even with a yearly service for your bike, you can still save enough money for return flights to Europe just by riding instead.
  3. Any bike will do: you don’t need a fancy bike to give riding a go, and they come in all shapes and sizes. Get that bike down off your balcony and bring it to one of our free tune-ups, use a share bike or visit your local bike shop to get started.
  4. It’s a great way to meet people: say hi to that shopkeeper down the road, wave to local school kids or ring a friendly bell to fellow riders. More than 42,000 city residents ride each week, so you’re always in good company.
  5. You’re doing something good for Sydney: help cut congestion by getting about by bike. 2,000 people cycle across the harbour bridge every day – enough to fill 30 busy buses. Every trip by bike helps keep Sydney moving.

  1. It’s easier than you think: nervous about how to get around by bike? Don’t be! Sydney’s bike network is bigger than you think. We’ll help you find your way with maps, courses and resources for a safe trip on cycleways, shared paths and quiet backstreets away from busy traffic.
  2. Arrive on time: by bike, there’s no public transport delays or getting stuck in traffic – you’re in control of your own journey. You can leave and arrive whenever you like and stop and smell the roses along the way.
  3. Turn up looking fresh as a daisy: It’s not a race! Take it easy on your way to work. Many offices now have end of trip facilities where you can park your bike and freshen up.
  4. Enjoy a free tune-up on us: We’re out and about on shared paths and cycleways in inner Sydney twice a week. Check cycling events at whatson.sydney.
