Better streets and spaces

A new cycleway for Oxford and Liverpool streets

A new separated cycleway on one of our busiest bike routes will make it safer and easier to cross the city

A new cycleway and better footpaths for Oxford Street will make it easier and safer ride and walk across the city.

The proposed 900m separated cycleway will run kerbside between Taylor Square and Castlereagh Street, connecting the city centre with the eastern suburbs.

It will connect with major bike routes across Sydney and support businesses along the Oxford Street retail and entertainment strip.

Supporting one of the city’s busiest bike routes

Oxford Street is one of the most used bike routes in our local area, with more than 2,000 bike trips every day. Once separated bike lanes are installed, it’s expected that bike trips will more than double in the first 12 months in line with the growth seen on other city cycleways such as the one on Pitt Street.

The two-way cycleway will run on the northern side of Oxford Street, with one west-bound traffic lane removed.

Connecting the bike network across the city

The Oxford and Liverpool streets cycleway is a critical link in a 9km bike route that connects Mascot in the south to Circular Quay in the north, and a 10km route connecting UNSW in the east and Lilyfield in the inner-west.

The cycleway also creates an important 6km connection between Bondi Junction and Circular Quay and will link with the state government’s planned cycle route between Taylor Square and Centennial Park.

The 1.7km cycleway will connect the existing Liverpool Street cycleway with Bourke Street cycleway and the city's east.

Your feedback on the cycleway design

In November 2020, we consulted on plans for a centre running pop-up cycleway on Oxford Street. After community feedback, we developed new concept plans for a permanent, higher quality 2-way cycleway on the north side of Oxford and Liverpool streets.

We will do an extensive month-long community consultation on the new cycleway design. This follows feedback from key stakeholders, including Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, Sydney Anzac War Memorial, Woollahra Council and local community and business leaders.

See the concept design, give feedback and find out about public information sessions for the Oxford and Liverpool streets cycleway.
