The City of Sydney has earned national recognition as one of Australia’s top organisations for employees.
Our dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion, employee-driven purpose and values, and teams-based approach to flexible working were all factors in the rating by the Australian Financial Review.
Creating a workplace that reflects what matters most
We’ve built a workplace that acknowledges the wellbeing of our employees is based on professional and personal priorities. Our best work comes when we’re allowed the space outside of the workplace to be there for family, friends and the things that make life meaningful for us.
“Flexibility comes in many forms and there’s no one size fits all approach. Modern flexibility should respond to the needs of our communities, key partners and teams,” People, Performance and Technology executive director Paulette Sutherland said.
“We encourage the autonomy and wellbeing benefits of flexibility for our people. We also foster a healthy workplace that thrives off in-person teamwork, exchange of ideas and socialising with peers.”
We provide:
- a rostered day off each month
- 3 days of care and cultural leave to participate in health and wellbeing activities, cultural or religious days or events of significance
- an approach to flexible working that values trust and a positive workplace culture
- an environment that allows parents to fully participate in their work lives, including 26 week paid parental leave, paid super for up to 52 weeks of parental leave, flexibility to work part-time and job share, and a pay gap in favour of women.
A place you’ll feel welcome, safe and supported
Sydney is a city that flourishes because of its diversity. Our organisation reflects the communities we work so hard for, and our diverse workplace contributes to our success.
“Our workforce is made up of people from many cultures, lived experiences and perspectives,” Chief Executive Officer Monica Barone said.
“This inclusivity helps us see risks and opportunities that we might otherwise miss, and we’ll always work hard to make our colleagues feel included, valued, and safe.”

Our vision for the future
Sustainable Sydney 2030–2050 Continuing the Vision is one of our most important community-led strategies. It encompasses our guiding principles for creating a future for Sydney that’s green, global and connected.
Although the world around us continues to change, our vision gives us an opportunity to grow sustainably, create, innovate and offer prospects for all.
Our purpose, caring for our city, creating for a future, gives us pride and drives us to continue our meaningful work.
Alongside other efforts such as our Reconciliation action plan and resilience strategy, this means we’re working together towards common goals that improve the quality of life for our city and communities.
