Planning for the future

Let’s talk about a future vision for Sydney

Government and international industry leaders come together to discuss plans for Sydney’s future.

It’s timely as we begin to see light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, we put forward a vision that sets our city on a path to recovery, now and over the next 30 years.

We’ve invited some big industry names to be part of a discussion exploring a series of future-focussed ideas that build on our Sustainable Sydney 2030 plan, and guide our city into the future.

Speaking live from the UK, London Mayor Sadiq Khan will be the keynote speaker for our first CityTalks event of the year – Sustainable Sydney 2030–2050 Continuing the Vision. He will share his aspirations for cities that are green, global and connected.

Joining Mayor Khan and Lord Mayor Clover Moore to discuss the vision and ideas will be:

  • The Hon Matt Kean MP, NSW Treasurer and Minister for Energy
  • Nicki Hutley – councillor, Climate Council, economics consultant, Social Outcomes
  • Ronni Kahn AO – OzHarvest CEO
  • Gabriel Metcalf – Committee for Sydney CEO
  • Ken Maher AO – HASSELL fellow and president Australian Sustainable Built Environment Council

“As we get set to extend our long-term vision to 2050, increasing our targets and pushing ourselves harder to ensure Sydney’s liveability, sustainability and diversity, this CityTalk is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the experience of local and global leaders,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Our city, like others around the world, faces a climate emergency, recovery from the impact of the pandemic and the long road to recovery that must have inclusion and social justice at the fore.

“Our community is critical to discussions about the city’s development – they have told us what they want, we have listened and this is a shared vision for the future.”

Up for discussion will be 10 project ideas highlighted in the vision, from supporting our creative industries and making space for culture to sustainable growth and capitalising on our harbour.

“I share the City of Sydney’s vision for a global city that is forward-thinking, safer and greener – this is about putting forward a bold and positive vision to renew one of the world’s greatest cities,” Mayor of London and chair of C40 Cities, Sadiq Khan said.

“There are synergies with my manifesto for London that I will look forward to sharing at the talk, particularly around pandemic recovery, affordable housing and climate change.”

The talk will be facilitated by Patricia Karvelas, presenter and host, ABC News and Radio National.
