Sydney set for a cracker Christmas

Celebrations are back in all their glory.

From concerts, trees and choirs to markets, decorations and Santa, we’ve got Christmas all wrapped up.

For the last 2 years, the City of Sydney scaled back festivities because of the pandemic – but this year we’re bringing Christmas back with a bang.

Kicking off celebrations will be our new-look Christmas in the City event. Over Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November, the heart of Sydney will be transformed into a festive wonderland with Martin Place hosting new Christmas markets, roving performers and choirs.

Choirs will mark the Christmas season

The focus of Saturday’s festivities will be the Martin Place Christmas tree lighting by Santa with spectacular fireworks launched from city rooftops.

Over 2 weekends in December, we’ll have 6 Christmas concerts at Pyrmont, Surry Hills, Rosebery, Rushcutters Bay, Glebe and Alexandria. The concerts will feature performances by a mix of artists to entertain kids and adults alike.

Choirs will perform across the city to entertain shoppers and visitors every day in December up until Christmas Eve, while tens of thousands of fairy lights in Martin Place and Pitt Street Mall will add to the festive ambience.

The Martin Place Christmas markets will also continue to run every Thursday, Friday and Saturday until Christmas offering a variety of locally made gifts, food and produce. And Green Square will host its third Christmas fair on 3 December with live music, fashion, homewares, food, art and craft.

“For the last couple of years, we haven’t been able to celebrate Christmas the way we’d like to – but this year Christmas will return to the city with a bang,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“This Christmas we’re excited to welcome everyone back to soak up the festive spirit, with a month-long program of free events of festivities celebrating the unique joy of Christmas in the southern hemisphere.”

More details on our Sydney Christmas program will be announced at What’s On.
