Explore the civic collection
Visit the More than meets the eye exhibition and explore the eclectic collection of historical items, artworks, civic memorabilia and official gifts.
Every day, no booking required
Town Hall House
Make a laser-cut print from the archives
Led by experienced facilitators and a City of Sydney archivist, this workshop is a great introduction to laser-cut printmaking and our archives.
You’ll be guided to access historical images and make a laser-cut etching plate. Once you’re happy with your final design, we’ll help you print it on our small press and you can take your creation home.

Learn about life as a prisoner of war
During World War 2, thousands of Australians became prisoners of the Japanese. More than 8,000 of them tragically died in captivity of disease, wilful neglect and cruelty. Discover how those who survived marked time and how we honour and remember them today.

Hear stories from a master clockmaker
Join Andrew Markerink for a lunchtime talk about Sydney’s many clocks, from the great Joyce clock at the General Post Office to Australia’s oldest functioning public clock at Hyde Park Barracks.

Take a stroll through history and time
Explore the Green Plaques guide via the Sydney Culture Walks app and delve into the history of significant sites and buildings throughout central Sydney. From the location of Sydney’s first gaol and an early shipyard on the Tank Stream to the site of the colony’s first execution and the lively Trocadero dance hall, more than 120 commemorative green plaques highlight our rich heritage at historic locations.
