The City of Sydney is investing $30 million on major projects to improve the public domain and public spaces across the city’s east over the next 10 years.
Projects include a wide-scale upgrade of the trunk drainage system to address potential flood risks on Victoria Street Woolloomooloo, restoration of the Cutler Footway and Burton Street viaduct and upgrades of local parks and green spaces.
The projects are part of the City’s 10 year $1.6 billion budget, with more than 430 projects to provide new and renovated facilities for communities and businesses across the City of Sydney area.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City had already delivered more than 250 important projects including parks, playgrounds, childcare, pools, libraries, theatres and community and cultural spaces over the last 10 years, and was working on hundreds more for Sydneysiders to enjoy into the future.
“We’re improving the public domain by replacing the Cutler Footway in Darlinghurst and refurbishing the ageing infrastructure surrounding it,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Our population is rapidly growing, so it’s incredibly important that we continue to meet the needs of our growing communities. The upgraded community facilities, open green spaces and infrastructure upgrades are all part of creating more welcoming and connected neighbourhoods.
“With a fast-growing population and large-scale urban transformation underway, we know the decisions we make today will affect our children and our children’s children. We have carefully budgeted to make sure the city is liveable, affordable and sustainable for future generations.”
Some of the major projects being funded and delivered in the City’s east over the next 10 years include:
- upgrade of the trunk drainage system in Woolloomooloo
- upgrades and improvements to small parks and playgrounds including James Hilder Reserve in Surry Hills
- construction of a new park on Palmer Street in Darlinghurst
- upgrade of the Reginald Murphy Activity Centre in Kings Cross.
- $324 million for public domain improvements, including footpaths, roadways and paving
- $319 million to upgrade the City’s parks and green spaces
- $273 million on Green Square infrastructure and projects
- $216 million on various enhancements to the City’s community, cultural and recreational properties
- $78 million on cycleways, providing bike riding connections between important destinations
- $22 million on childcare facilities across the city.
