Bigger and brighter family fun at Light the City

Published 19 September 2019

Mrs Macquaries Point will shine brighter than ever this September, with an illuminated Sydney Rides event taking place before the clocks change to make the most of the city's twilight.

The popular Light the City event takes place on Saturday 21 September this year, giving families more time to enjoy the light shows before the clocks move to daylight savings and create longer spring and summer evenings.

The 2.5km traffic-free loop along Mrs Macquaries Road will feature a glitter ball arena, a glowing rainbow path, a tunnel of twinkling lights and lasers and animated light beams.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said Light the City was the perfect way for people of all ages to get on their bikes or walk the route and experience Sydney in a new light.

"Light the City is a wonderful opportunity for families to get out in the evening, walk or ride through light installations, and enjoy an open air picnic and dance floor," the Lord Mayor said.

"With more than 30 events in this year's Sydney Rides season, there's something for everyone to enjoy, whether you're a regular rider, taking the family out for a fun evening or keen to dust off your bike."

Light the City will also feature roller racing, a waterfront silent disco, bling-your-bike sessions and roving entertainers. Kids can enjoy face painting and make their own bike powered smoothie.

Families can picnic under the stars or feast on gourmet treats from some of Sydney's top food trucks in the outdoor lounge.

The best way to get to Light the City is to walk, ride or use public transport. St James and Martin Place train stations are a short walk away. Bike hire and bike valet parking will be available on the night.

Light the City is the opening event of Sydney Rides, a season-long celebration of the increasing numbers of people bike riding in Sydney.

Sydney Rides runs from 1 September to 30 November. Events include bicycle speed dating, a photo exhibition, a mass ride across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney's biggest pop-up adventure playground at Sydney Park.
