City businesses get on board for free advice

Published 25 February 2016

Dozens of local small businesses took advantage of free professional advice from industry experts when the Small Biz Bus pulled up at Town Hall on George Street today.

Operated by the Office of the NSW Small Business Commissioner, the Small Biz Bus travels to business hubs around NSWconnecting small business owners with business advisors and community services to help local businesses grow.

The Small Biz Bus is supported by the City of Sydney and will be in place in front of Town Hall from 8:30am to 3pm. Lord Mayor Clover Moore was on hand to welcome local businesses on board.

"George Street is set to become a world class destination for locals, visitors and those who work in the city. We’re proud to support the Small Biz Bus that offers local business operators and start-ups the chance to tap into invaluable information at a time of exciting change,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Sydney is undergoing one of the biggest transformations in its history. The new light rail network and the pedestrianisation of George Street will create an exciting environment for local businesses, and presents opportunities for new ventures,” the Lord Mayor said.

Small Biz Connect advisors offer guidance on starting a business, business finances, staffing, expansion plans, dealing with other businesses or government, marketing and making the most of online and digital opportunities.

Local business owner Laura Lay was referred to the programme by the City of Sydney and is encouraging other companies to take advantage of the free consultation that helped transform her business.

“Thanks to this service, we were able to assess what was happening in our business, look to the future and change our business model,” said Laura, director of Darlinghurst business, He Made She Made.

“This exciting step has transformed our business into a roaming model that can better meet the challenges of public exhibitions and events, creative consultancy and publishing.”

Acting NSW Small Business Commissioner, Suzie Matthews, said advisors can help business owners take the next step.

“Whether you’re just starting out, wanting to ensure your business is sustainable or hoping to grow, talking to an advisor can really help,” Suzie Matthews said.

The Small Biz Bus is an initiative of the state government and an extension of the Small Biz Connect program. Launch in 2012, last year the Small Biz Bus visited 327 communities across NSW.
