Everyone has a say in shaping Sydney’s future

Published 11 March 2019

Sydney residents, workers, businesses, students, and visitors are being called on to share their vision of what the city should be like in 2050.

The City of Sydney has launched an online survey to help shape its new strategic plan to 2050.

This new plan will build on the City’s existing strategy, Sustainable Sydney 2030, which was developed with the community in 2008.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said that as the City plans for the future, it needs to hear from everyone who is interested in the city’s future.

“I want to make sure that our new plan for Sydney is once again led by the community and informed by research and technical advice,” the Lord Mayor said.

“We need to consider the kind of city people will inherit in 10, 20 and even 30 years’ time and set new targets for the decades beyond 2030, to 2050.

“That’s why we’re turning to the people who live, work, study, run businesses in and visit Sydney. It’s these people who will help us shape the future of our global city.

“We’ll also create a 10,000-strong citizens’ panel for ongoing feedback on the City’s plans, programs and projects.

“Our existing Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision has helped us deliver unprecedented achievements for our community, and been used by other cities as the inspiration for developing their own plans. But, like other cities, we’re facing significant challenges and it’s time to plan even further into the future.”

In the past 10 years urbanisation, globalisation, technology and climate change have continued to challenge cities around the world. The new plan will help ensure Sydney continues to be a leading global city to live, work and visit.

Driven by community feedback, Sustainable Sydney 2030 has resulted in a range of achievements, including:

  • completing over 250 projects – new and upgraded parks, playgrounds, childcare centres and pools, libraries, theatres and community and cultural spaces
  • building or upgrading 77 parks and 46 playgrounds, and planting more than 12,000 street trees
  • creating a new 200km bike network, including bike paths which separate riders from pedestrians and traffic
  • delivering a $540 million infrastructure program for Green Square, one of Australia’s largest urban renewal projects providing for 61,000 residents and 21,000 workers
  • working with leaders, business and other cities around the world to help us achieve ambitious sustainability goals, through initiatives like the Better Buildings Partnership, CitySwitch, 100 Resilient Cities and the C40 Climate Leadership Group
  • slashing emissions by 25 per cent in the City’s own operations, and 20 per cent across the local area
  • working to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture through the Eora Journey project, which includes a series of major artworks and an economic development plan
  • helping grow the city’s economy by almost $50 billion, totalling $125 billion and contributing more than 10 per cent of Australia’s current economic growth.

The survey is now available online for all to complete and will be open until April 22: www.sydney2050.com

Supporting interactive data stories will give background information on the issues covered in the survey.

The City will host stalls across the local area where people can find out about the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2050 strategic plan and complete the survey.

The survey forms part of the City’s comprehensive consultation strategy to help guide the future of Sydney.
