Sydneysiders can enjoy a taste of fresh produce – from inner west honey and Hunter Valley duck eggs, to locally crafted chocolate and chutneys – at the City Farm trial markets at Sydney Park.
The City of Sydney’s farmers markets will offer locally grown food and fine produce from across the Sydney basin at a series of three pop-up events on 22 January, 29 January and 5 February.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the markets will be a great opportunity for residents to sample the best of farm and urban produce available.
“This market will give farmers from across Sydney the opportunity to sell seasonal goods in the heart of Sydney’s inner west, and be a place for locals to meet and enjoy fresh produce,” the Lord Mayor said.
“The stalls will create a lively place for people to shop, relax and pick up fresh fruit and vegetables, organic meat and a wide variety of other produce– all in beautiful Sydney Park.
“Our City Farm will play a vital role in educating the community about the importance of locally grown food as well as supplying fresh fruit and vegies to the community.”
The markets are a taster for the community before a regular weekly farmers market starts at Sydney Park later in 2016.
City Farm works will begin in early 2016 and will also include areas for crops, a fruit-filled orchard, bush tucker plants and native herbs.
As well as promoting agriculture and sustainable farming practices, the farm will provide educational, volunteering and community programs. It will be run using a sustainable governance model, where the community will gradually take ownership of the farm in the long term.
“The City Farm will be a special place that gives inner-city residents a taste of life on a farm in the heart of our city,” the Lord Mayor said.
“Many inner-city dwellers live in apartments and don’t have a backyard of their own – this open space will allow visitors to grow and enjoy fresh seasonal produce.”
