Fashion’s night out brings buzz back to the city

Published 11 October 2022

The biggest one-night shopping event in Australia returns to Sydney next week and is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors into city centre retailers and businesses.

Hundreds of retailers and brands will take part in Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out – an annual shopping extravaganza that brings excitement and energy to the centre of the city.

As a major sponsor, the City of Sydney is contributing $170,000 in cash and in-kind support to encourage visitors to take part in the event and spend time in the city centre.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out would help re-ignite enthusiasm for all the city centre has to offer.

“Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out has become an established event on the calendar for many Sydneysiders – and not just fashionistas,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“For so many, the pandemic made an already challenging retail environment almost impossible.

“Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out returning to the city centre as a live, one-day event will benefit both our retailers and the hard-hit hospitality sector.

“The event is waving the banner of optimism, signalling the city is abuzz – that Sydney is once again the lively, spirited and engaging place it has always been.”

Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out gives retailers the opportunity to connect with shoppers through existing and new in-store specials. Some of the enticements on offer will include:

  • exclusive customer activities
  • scan-to-win promotions
  • live runway shows
  • fashion Q&As
  • music performances and more.

The international fashion event first started in New York City in 2009, designed to celebrate shopping and support the fashion industry during the global financial crisis. The event has been celebrated in shopping capitals around the world including Madrid, Milan and Tokyo.

Since 2012 the Australian event has helped combat the challenges faced by the retail industry by creating a platform for retailers to connect with existing and new audiences, leveraging the Vogue brand.

In 2019, an estimated 206,000 people attended the Sydney event, with an average spend of $244, and more than 200 retailers participating. The event generated approximately $45.5m of economic impact to the city centre retail sector.

Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out takes place on Thursday 20 October from 10am to 9pm and is free for everyone.
