Kids stencil and stamp their way through winter

Published 22 June 2016

The creation of pet portraits, snow domes, stuffed animals, colourful dreamcatchers, jewellery and tote bags are some of the many workshops available to kids and teens through a series of school holiday programs run by the City of Sydney.

Young people can also learn a traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance, improve their archery skills, climb a rock wall, or embark on a group adventure to Taronga Zoo.

The programs will run from 4–15 July and offer a variety of classes and group activities for the 5–8, 9–15 and 12–18 age groups.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the City’s children’s services and community centres had put together a program of high-quality workshops to keep kids of all ages stimulated this winter.

“Sydney’s young budding artists can find both warmth and inspiration this winter with instructive, fun-filled art projects they can take home with them at the end of the day,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Each program’s wide variety of activities will keep the little ones entertained and teenagers engaged, while also teaching them new skills they can continue to practice in the future.”

Workshops for the 12–18 age group include making an origami puzzle box and calico tote bag and t-shirt using retro techniques such as stencilling, screen printing and hand stamping, as well as learning the craft of woodworking and refining basketball and soccer skills.

Back by popular demand, those aged 9–15 can enjoy a day of experimental art processes and drawing games. Other activities include making a leaf mobile and dream catcher, using Photoshop to create paintings, and crafting unique Viking jewellery.

And little ones, aged 5–8, can have their first go at flying a kite or riding a bike, create their own sketchbook for future doodling, dream of colder places while constructing a snow globe, and snuggle up with a soft toy they made themselves.
