Little lives as seen through the lens

Published 4 June 2018

Young Sydney photographers aged between 3 and 11 years are invited to submit images for the City of Sydney’s annual Little Sydney Lives photography competition and exhibition.

Budding photographers are encouraged to capture images of what life in Sydney means to them and enter the competition for the chance to win $500 in photography equipment and accessories.

Twenty finalist images will be selected and blown up into large-scale portraits for an outdoor exhibition in Sandringham Gardens in Hyde Park.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the competition is a chance for Sydney’s youngest citizens to present their important perspectives on camera.

“Each year the Little Sydney Lives competition encourages creativity in young Sydneysiders and allows people to see our city from a fresh perspective,” the Lord Mayor said.

“Colourful images of nature, siblings, family life, pets and city adventures all illustrate how 3 to 11 year olds see our city.

“Little Sydney Lives is celebrating its eighth year and has become a much-loved exhibition.”

Finalist images will be selected for the exhibition by a panel of judges comprising Australian playwright and Sydney Festival director Wesley Enoch, Australian artist Ken Done and photographer, and former Australian Life winner and internationally renowned photographer, Tamara Dean.

Winners will be selected in each of two categories – 3 to 7 and 8 to 11 years – and announced at the opening of the exhibition on 13 September.

The Little Sydney Lives exhibition, curated by photographer Sandy Edwards, will run until 7 October.

Last year, seven-year-old Alex Noel Saksena from Kellyville was the winner in the 3–7 years age category for his shot My Little Soldiers Guarding Australia, an image of ants congregating around a hand-drawn map of Australia.

Eleven year old Dibe Chaker from Guildford was the winner in the 8–11 years age category for her up-close shot of a rose captured post-rainfall titled Rose At Night.

Little Sydney Lives is part of the City of Sydney’s year-round Art & About program of events and temporary art projects in unusual spaces throughout the city.

The Little Sydney Lives competition opens on 8 June and closes on 29 July.
