Locals learn energy tips for a low-carbon life

Published 21 April 2016

Inner-city residents can learn from the experts on cutting their energy bills through a series of free workshops at Newtown’s Green Living Centre.

The Green Living Centre, a joint initiative of City of Sydney and Marrickville City Council, is a sustainability hub with free workshops and advice sessions on low-carbon living.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the centre’s workshops give community members the tools and knowledge for sustainable living as well as practical tips on reducing power bills.

“Our community told us they want to reduce their energy use at home but would like to learn about simple ways they can do it,” the Lord Mayor said.

“There are a range of programs including solar workshops and practical advice plus a drop-in shopfront for residents to learn how to make simple changes.”

The Green Living Centre offers energy cafes monthly that provide residents a chance to pop into the centre for tea and information sharing about everything from home heating and cooling solutions to smart metering.

Solar workshop facilitator, Adam Corrigan, said his free session equips residents with everything they need to know to install solar PV.

“Solar and battery storage is currently a hot topic and this workshop is a fantastic one-stop-shop,” Mr Corrigan said.

“Participants will learn to save energy costs by using the right tools to reduce and regulate their energy use. This will mean not only reducing their carbon footprint but saving money at the same time.”

“Our residents are asking for clear practical assistance on how to reduce their energy use and installing solar,” Mayor of Marrickville Council Sam Iskandar said.

“The Green Living Centre is a valued resource for the community to get free, independent and impartial advice.”
