Protecting the heritage of Millers Point

Published 7 June 2016

The City of Sydney is calling on the NSW Government to give one of Australia’s most significant heritage conservation areas, Millers Point, greater protection under planning laws.

Under the Millers Point Planning Proposal, the City has asked for a revision to the Local Environment Plan (LEP) that would see the existing height and floor space of properties protected under a new planning control.

“Our planners have discovered that current floor space and building height controls do not protect these important examples of nineteenth and early twentieth century architecture,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“By changing the LEP, we can protect Millers Point’s irreplaceable history, while providing consistency and certainty for future home owners in the area.

“I was outraged these social housing buildings were sold into private ownership, but now we must ensure further development maintains the unique heritage of the area.

“Buildings within the Heritage Conservation Area have a high level of original fabric, form and architectural detailing. Amending the controls now ensures that the significant heritage and value of each building is retained, and potential owners are fully aware of the situation before they buy.”

Minor changes to the height and floor space of the existing buildings may be considered if the changes are consistent with heritage recommendations.

Millers Point was developed between the 1810s and 1930s, and its character has been well-preserved since. It is this “completeness and intactness”, according to the State Heritage Register, that gives the area its national and state heritage significance.

As one of the first areas to be entirely listed on the State Heritage Register by the NSW Government, Millers Point is recognised for its heritage significance and value to the people of NSW and Australia. Almost all properties within the area are also listed individually.
