Swing for a lunar feast this Chinese New Year

Published 26 January 2016

Sydneysiders can swing into some of the city’s best Asian restaurants offering an array of set-price menus and specials to celebrate the Year of the Monkey.

From 6–21 February, ‘Lunar Feasts’ menus will feature at around 40 restaurants across the city, from the Opera Bar at Circular Quay to Hero Sushi – World Square, Chat Thai in Chinatown, Fat Noodle at The Star in Pyrmont and Fu Manchu in Darlinghurst.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore encouraged Sydneysiders and visitors to take advantage of the special Chinese New Year offers and toast the Year of the Monkey.

“Sydney is home to some of the best Asian restaurants in the world and this is a great opportunity to enjoy a New Year’s banquet with family, have a night out with friends, or just enjoy a quick snack at great prices,” the Lord Mayor said.

“There is a bounty of food choices on offer, from Yum Cha to ramen, dumplings and Peking duck, with a range of cuisines including Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Korean, Indonesian and Malaysian.”

Lunar Feasts highlights include a ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’ cocktail, ‘Good Luck Dishes’ and an ‘auspicious and delicious’ pan-Asian banquet.

Festival Curator Claudia Chan Shaw said she was delighted with the number of restaurants – including many new ones, and many outside Sydney’s traditional Chinatown area – joining the 2016 Lunar Feasts line-up.

“Sharing meals with family and friends is a very important part of Lunar New Year celebrations, and many foods hold symbolic meanings,” Ms Shaw said.

“With so many great Lunar Feasts offerings, you can eat your way around Sydney while checking out all the wonderful events, demonstrations, activities and celebrations on offer, including the Lunar Lanterns exhibition.”
