Sydney ambassadors are first port of call

Published 18 August 2016

The City of Sydney is seeking local experts to volunteer as Sydney ambassadors and welcome international cruise ship passengers arriving in Sydney from October throughout the cruise season.

Armed with maps, advice and ideas about things to do, the ambassadors will help inform visitors of the city’s world-class shops, restaurants, theatres, museums, galleries and green open spaces.

“This program is all about promoting our beautiful city and its world-class events and landmarks the minute visitors step off the ship,” City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone said.

“Our volunteer Sydney ambassadors get the chance to meet new people, share local knowledge and ensure visitors have a memorable day, week or even month in Sydney.

“With each shipload of passengers injecting around $2 million into Sydney’s economy each day, the ambassadors program is a great way to support local businesses and help visitors make the most of everything this city has to offer.”

Long-time volunteer Sydney ambassador Jim Dickie said the City recruits a top team of volunteers each season who take pride in representing Sydney and who have great local knowledge.

“As Sydney ambassadors we extend a warm welcome to visitors and ensure they have an enjoyable and memorable Sydney experience to take home and share with their friends and family,” Mr Dickie said.

“Visitors to Sydney want to have the authentic Sydney and Australian experience. We take pride in creating a positive first impression of Sydney and lasting memories for visitors.”

The Sydney ambassadors will be out in force greeting the tens of thousands of passengers who are expected to arrive in Sydney from October 2016 through to April 2017. The service operates out of the Overseas Passenger Terminal and White Bay Terminal.

In February 2014, the City’s volunteer ambassadors welcomed a record 90,000 passengers arriving aboard 39 cruise ships. In 2015, more than 290 passenger vessels visited Sydney making it one of the largest streams of visitors in the city’s cruise ship history.

Sydney Ambassadors is a joint project between the City of Sydney, Destination NSW and Sydney Ports.
