A star-studded line-up of Australia’s leading stage and screen entertainers will come together tonight (Monday) for a benefit concert at Sydney Town Hall to honour the victims of the Orlando shooting.
From Sydney With Love – A Concert for Orlando will be held from 7pm–11pm with town hall being illuminated pink to show the City’s support.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the Orlando shooting was a hate crime against the LGBTIQ community that sent shock waves across the world and was acutely felt in the City of Sydney.
“Our hearts broke when news of the horrific shooting in Orlando made it to Sydney. That day we flew the rainbow flag above Sydney Town Hall and lit the building pink in solidarity,” the Lord Mayor said.
“We’re proud to now open up Town Hall’s doors for From Sydney With Love and stand with the strong LGBTIQ community in Orlando and the US, in Sydney, and across the globe.”
“We must never turn our heads away when we see prejudice or injustice of any kind in our community.”
Magda Szubanski, Joel Cresley, Bob Downe, Paul Capsis, iOTA, Emma Matthews, Simon Burke and Virginia Gay are just some of the big names who will perform.
Produced by Trevor Ashley, Catherine Alcorn and George Youakim in association with ACON and the City of Sydney, the concert will raise funds for the victims and families of the Orlando tragedy, sending a message of love, strength and solidarity with the community in Orlando.
Funds raised will go to the Equality Florida Pulse Victims Fund. The fund was established to support victims’ families, survivors and those who may not have suffered injury but are in need of support. So far more than US$6 million has been raised.
The world was devastated by the news of the mass shooting at Pulse nightclub, in Orlando, Florida on 12 June 2016. Forty-nine people were killed, with many more physically and emotionally injured by the attack.
People around the world are coming together to show their support for the Orlando LGBTQI community through strength in numbers, candlelit vigils and fundraising efforts.
The City of Sydney is proud to support From Sydney With Love by providing a $5,000 grant and Sydney Town Hall as the concert venue free of charge under the venue support grants and sponsorship program.
