The world of science in Aboriginal culture

Published 8 August 2016

From physics and robotics experiments to learning about bush medicine, kids can this month explore how science is used by the world’s oldest living culture at a free family fun day in Redfern.

The Indigenous Science Experience day at Redfern Community Centre on Sunday 21 August is co-hosted by the City of Sydney, National Indigenous Science Education Program (NISEP), Macquarie University and Inspiring Australia.

The event will feature activities presented by academic/research scientists, Indigenous Elders, student peer-educators, and outreach and community leaders.

City of Sydney CEO Monica Barone said the event was a great way to promote the value of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander traditional science and its important contribution to research and education.

“We are proud to support this Indigenous Science Experience, providing Sydneysiders with the opportunity to learn from scientists and Aboriginal elders about science in a fun and interactive way,” Ms Barone said.

NISEP is a consortium of Indigenous communities, schools, universities, and science and Indigenous outreach organisations.

Associate Professor Joanne Jamie from NISEP said the annual event was a unique opportunity for the public to learn more about traditional Indigenous knowledge in science and technology.

“Our program aims to foster and develop the confidence and leadership potential of Indigenous youth using science as an engagement tool,” Professor Jamie said.

“I encourage everyone to come along and yarn with Yaegl and Wiradjuri Elders and Aboriginal scientists and engage in science activities with our wonderful Indigenous youth. People can join fun activities from making an Aboriginal stone axe and learning about Aboriginal astronomy to interactive chemistry experiments and liquid nitrogen shows.”

Event visitors will also learn how Aboriginal practices help in managing the land and treating illnesses. Hands-on activities for younger children include creating slime, maths puzzles and insect handling.
