Victoria Park upgrade launch

An inner-city oasis for the people

  • An inner city oasis for residents and visitors

Victoria Park is located in Camperdown at the junction of City and Parramatta roads and next to the University of Sydney. The park is a 9.2-hectare city oasis that provides important recreational space for residents, students and visitors.

  • Improving Lake Northam

Lake Northam, to the north of the park, is a remnant of Blackwattle Creek. The creek once extended from Glebe to Redfern and Waterloo. Improvements to the lake include a new wetland designed to clean and filter stormwater runoff.

  • An enticing home for wildlife

Lake Northam provides habitat for a range of waterbirds. Some are resident and breed there, while others come and go with the seasons. The pond is also home to Eastern long-necked and Murray River turtles, frogs and native eels.

  • A better space for recreation

New features of the park include a netball practice court, table tennis, upgraded paths, better lighting, and new seating and bubblers.

  • Visitors learn about the park's history

Gazetted in 1870, Victoria Park was designed by Charles Moore, director of the Royal Botanic Garden, in picturesque style. The park is the site of some of the earliest land grants in the colony, beginning in 1789. The latest upgrade is one of many in the park’s history.

  • An engaging space for events

Victoria Park is a popular walking spot. It also hosts events including Yabun Festival, the nation’s largest 1-day showcase of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, and Fair Day, a family and dog-friendly fundraiser for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

  • Celebrating on a sunny day

People enjoyed live music by The Low Down Riders. There was free coffee and gelato on this crisp, sunny winter’s day.

  • People together in the park

Locals filled the launch event. They mingled and explored the park’s new features.

  • Lord Mayor Clover Moore with local community members

Lord Mayor Clover Moore officially opened the upgraded Victoria Park. We’ve improved this central green space where Sydneysiders can meet, unwind and exercise to meet the needs of our growing population.

The Victoria Park upgrade was launched on Saturday 30 June 2018.

Improvements include a netball practice court, table tennis, upgraded paths, better lighting, and new seating and water bubblers.
