6 Sydney courses to help you conquer computers, smartphones and the net

Technology changes so fast it can be hard to keep up. Using a smartphone or paying a bill online for the first time can be confusing.

Low-cost courses at community centres and libraries across the City of Sydney are helping hundreds of Sydneysiders build confidence in basic computer and online skills.

From searching to surfing, there’s a lot to discover.

1. Computer social club in Potts Point

Pop into the Reginald Murphy Community Centre on Thursdays from 9.30am to 11am and learn tips and tricks for tablets, smartphones and computers. It’s a great way to meet people while learning how to use the internet, make video calls, send emails and shop online. You can borrow a tablet if you need to.

2. Life internet skills in Redfern

Expand your life online when you learn how to search for information, book tickets, pay bills, shop and bank. You’ll also learn to use social media to connect with family and friends. You’ll need basic mouse and keyboard skills. Drop in on Tuesdays from 10am to 12pm or sign up for the 10-week course.

3. Computer, tablet and mobile phone tech support in Alexandria

If your digital device is frustrating, this is the place for you. You can drop in for free on Mondays and Fridays from 10am to 12pm and our IT expert will sort out your IT problems with you.

4. Introduction to computers and tech help in Redfern

Perfect for people who’ve never used a computer, this drop-in class is on Tuesdays from 1pm to 2.30pm. You’ll learn to use a mouse, computer keyboard and the Microsoft Windows operating system.

5. Smart phone, tablet and iDevice basics in Redfern

This course is just for iPhones and iPads. You’ll learn how to take and share photos on your device, download useful applications and travel using Google maps. Classes take place every second Monday from 1pm to 2.30pm.

6. Tech-savvy seniors at libraries across the city

This free introductory series helps older people gain confidence in basic computer and digital skills. You’ll be introduced to computers, the internet, email, online shopping and banking and social media. You can also use the library computers.
