From studios to science labs: behind the scenes of Sydney’s climate action

Ditching air freight, buying renewable electricity, installing solar – more and more businesses across our local area are ramping up their climate action.

They’re negotiating heavy-hitting, impactful projects – not just the feel-good stuff.

Disney Studios Australia became the first operating film studio in Australia to install a solar power system. Complementing this, several buildings onsite have switched to 100% GreenPower electricity plans. Led by its green team, these initiatives are part of a broader suite of environmental projects.

Medical equipment company Boston Scientific ANZ shifted from air to sea freight and slashed its emissions.

• CitySwitch - Australia’s flagship decarbonisation program for offices. Boston Scientific ANZ has been a member since 2022. CitySwitch membership is free.
• Better Buildings Partnership (BBP) - a collaboration of leading property owners and industry influencers.
• Sustainable Destination Partnership (SDP) - a collaboration of hotels, backpacker hostels, serviced apartments, cultural institutions, entertainment venues and industry influencers. Disney Studios Australia is a founding partner. SDP membership is free.

The collective impact of the organisations in these programs is impressive and motivating:

• BBP members reduced emissions by 95% since 2006 and 88% of members’ base building electricity is purchased from renewable energy farms.
• CitySwitch members kept an emissions intensity of just 31 kg CO₂e per square metre
• SDP members reduced emissions by 31% since 2018

We congratulate all the tenacious individuals who chip away, one conversation at a time, one email at a time, to reduce their organisation’s emissions, even when progress feels about as swift as traffic down Anzac Parade on game day.
