Step up to welcome the world to Sydney

Opportunities abound for Sydney ambassador.

Volunteering as a tourism ambassador led Andrea Powell to a new passion, education and even a new job.

The Wollstonecraft resident said she loves being a friendly face to welcome visitors from around the world.

"It's all about showing people my city and sharing my love of Sydney and all the wonderful places there are - the walks, the cafes, the hidden gems," she said.

Andrea enjoyed talking with tourists so much that she's since enrolled in a guiding course at TAFE which led to a new job in the tourism industry.

Volunteering is so good. It's given a totally different direction to my life and has allowed me to work longer than I thought possible.

The City's team of volunteer tourism ambassadors roam visitor hotspots like Chinatown, the Queen Victoria Building and Customs House. The team provides friendly advice on all that Sydney has to offer to new visitors and helps them explore the city for the first time.

In 2016, a record 336 cruise ships visited Sydney. In 2017, overnight visitors to Sydney spent more than $15 billion in the local area.
