10 things you can do free with a library card

Membership is great value

A City of Sydney library membership is free if you live in NSW. Here are 10 things you can do free with a library card.

1. Watch movies and documentaries

There are over 30,000 titles for you to binge on, no strings attached. Currently available are popular recent releases like Lion, Loving Vincent and the award-winning documentary about Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu. Stream online or borrow a DVD.

2. Stream and download music

Need some new tunes? You can download and stream over 15 million songs from over 40,000 labels without downloading any software.

3. Tinker with a robot

Inventive and creative minds will love exploring robotics and programming with our take-home makerspace kits. Learn how to control a robotic ball or turn a banana into a touchpad to play online games, with a range of kits for ages 5+.

4. Learn a language

You don’t have to take an expensive class or trawl a million YouTube videos to learn a language. Members get free access to Mango Languages, interactive online learning courses with over 70 languages. Or you can borrow our language kits including books and CDs.

5. Take a free computer course

Need to brush up on your Excel skills? We have courses for this and other common software for learners of various levels.

6. Find your family

Trace your family history with the library version of the popular site Ancestory.com. You’ll get access to birth, death and marriage records, passenger lists, census records and more.

7. Attend a free talk or workshop

Our library programs team has devised a continuous schedule of events for kids, teens and adults. From comedy and storytime for children to coding workshops, there’s something for everyone almost every day of the year.

8. Borrow toys instead of buying them

Save money and the planet. Don’t buy lots of new toys to be discarded as soon as your child grows out of them. We have more than 200 toys and puzzles available for loan to help your little one develop.

9. Work on Adobe Creative Suite

Have a poster to make or some photos to edit? No need to invest in Adobe software at home. Come and use Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and Premiere Pro at our Kings Cross library. If you need to brush up on your Adobe skills or learn from scratch, we also run affordable short courses.

10. Read books, mags and newspapers online

We have great titles to read online like the New Yorker, The Economist, Wallpaper and Gourmet Traveller. Or, if you like getting some reading done on your way to work, download an audiobook.

And of course, if you need a quiet space to work or study, you’re welcome to use the wifi in one of our branches.

If you are not already a City of Sydney library member, join now.
